oh, the opals!

…The girls’ ages range from 6 to 22, and I was at a loss, as to what to do.

Ruth loved jewelry, and over the years, I had given her some special pieces. As I was going through her things, I found a set that I had given her years ago. It was an opal earring and bracelet set. When I got to looking at it closer, I realized there was a pair of earrings, and 10 opals in the bracelet… 10 + 2 = 12! Here was the answer to my Christmas present for the girls!

I called Heartland Jewelry, to see if my crazy idea was even possible. Since I live a little over an hour away, I didn’t want to make the trip, if they couldn’t help me.

They were so kind and understanding, and said that yes, they most likely could recreate my wife’s set into 12 special pieces, for my 12 granddaughters.

Well, the end result was fantastic! They recreated those earrings and the bracelet into 12 necklaces. Each of the opals, “free form” they called them, were just a little different size and shape from each other, and so each of the necklaces is an individual – just like my 12 girls. They helped me pick out the necklace chains, put the opal pendants on each one, boxed them up, and even wrapped them for me.

It was wonderful.

It was a tearful Christmas, without “Grandma Ruth,” but the girls faces were beaming through their tears, as they opened their keepsake gifts. I hope that at least some of them will wear them on their wedding day, so that grandma will be with them as they walk down the aisle.

Heartland Jewelry made this ol’ grandpa look pretty good last year. Thank you for your help and for making a difficult situation much easier on my heart.
